Chad Starling

I draw inspiration from a thought or feeling that comes to me. Putting my pen to paper and writing those words over and over until a meaning becomes layered and revealed through its form.

Starling combines the written word with the visual language in a body of work called WORDANDFORM. Each typographic illustration is hand written with repeated words. One piece can take up to two years to complete with writing sometimes as small as over 400 letters per square inch. He uses a combination of micron, gel, marker and paint pens on 100% cotton paper. In our digitally-driven climate, people are often shocked that his work is all done by hand. His handwritten mnemonic devices begs the viewer to slow down and exist in a more alert, aware and present space.

With degrees in photography, graphic design, and theology, Starling pursues the integration of artistic creation with his passion as a seasoned designer, specializing in stained glass and book cover design. Though he has ties throughout the country, Starling lives in Fairfield, Iowa with his wife Madeline and their 4 amazing children.
